CS 466 - Usability analysis

Due: 2019-11-25 10:10a

Usability tests

In class, you will run participants through your benchmark tasks and observe their behavior while they do it. When we run usability studies, we typically have specific goals in mind (error rates, speed, etc). In your case, we will take a bit of a holistic view, but your goal is to learn more than whether or not it "works" or "people like it".

As you observe users using your app, I would like you to keep track of how many times they make a mistake. When you can, figure out the cause of the mistake (couldn't hit the target, exploring, misunderstood an icon, etc...). You should also make note of points when the user's mental model diverges from what you were hoping to present.

I would like you to run at least one addition test after Friday's class session with someone from outside of the class.

Analysis

I would like you to write an analysis of what you learned from your tests. This should include:

  • a description of what kinds of errors were made and how often
  • how the mental model matched or diverged from yours
  • surprises
  • changes to the interface suggested by your tests

I would also like a plan for what you hope to accomplish for the final version of the app.

Please submit this document as a PDF file to Canvas.
