Problem Set Self Assessment
- On Canvas, go to the Problem Set Solutions folder under the Files tab to view the solution for the relevant problem set.
- From the Assignments tab on Canvas, click on the problem set to self assess.
- Use the point annotation to make comments for each problem, based on my solutions:
- If correct, describe any relevant skills you have demonstrated.
- If incorrect, describe the type of error, and how you might improve in the future.
- Exapmles of errors:
- Proof is missing logical steps
- I did not fully understand the class/language
- I misinterpreted the problem
- Proof is overly complicated
- Used wrong proof technique
- Examples of improvements:
- Start earlier to have time to review after time away to see with fresh eyes
- Read each problem carefully during rough draft phase and again in pset phase
- Take more time to try different proof approaches
- If there are problems you would like additional feed-back on, or if you have a question about the problem set, post to the Canvas Problem Set Discussion board, or come to office hours to discuss.
- You're done!

Make a copy of this Google Doc, replace [your name] with your name, and share it with me so that I have Commenter access.
Fill out the Learning Goals section of the document as described below (instructions are also in the document itself). Then at go/KimmelHours schedule a meeting with me during the week of 2/21 to discuss your learning plan. Finally, on Canvas submit the url link to your Google doc on the Learning Plan assignment.
Your learning plan should consist of two parts. The first part should be your objectives for the semester, and the second part should lay out the processes you plan to employ to achieve your objectives. Keep in mind that this is a 400-level (and possibly CW) class, so your goals and process should be commensurate with what you feel that level entails. When we meet, I will let you know whether I think they are reasonably ambitious.
- Look over my learning goals for the course. Then decide on several additional goals for yourself for this course. To do this, think about what you are personally hoping to get out of this course, and out of your college experience more generally. Here are some examples to get you thinking: be more comfortable asking questions, become a better listener in group work, be able to explain NP to your cousin, etc. These goals can be technical and topical for this course, or more general life goals that you hope to work towards. Please include at least one goal that is related to becoming better at collaborating with others. For each goal you add, briefly explain why it is important to you, how challenging you think it might be to achieve, and how to judge if you achieve your goal.
- With your goals in mind, please think about what specific processes you intend to implement to work towards your goals. Look over the class participation section of the syllabus. I have found that the processes I lay out in this section tend to enhance learning for most students. I encourage you to try this process for a week or two before making adjustments. However, you may have other process goals, like: spend at least some time every day on this class, or attend office hours every week, or revise every quiz at least once, or work at least 10 hours a week on this class, or processes that will help you achieve your personalized learning goals. Please list your process goals and how you feel they will help you to achieve your learning objectives.
- I encourage you to stick with a consistent weekly schedule (for psets, quizzes, self-assessments, and revisions) since regular practice is key to learning. I have laid out a suggested schedule on the calendar, which matches up with deadlines on Canvas. However, based on your individual schedule and learning approach, you may want to change the day of the week that various components are due. If so, please let me know your intended weekly schedule in this learning plan; this will be helpful for me in providing you with timely feedback, and also for you to have a definite plan to try to stick to. Feel free to incorporate other process tasks/deadlines into your schedule, like attending office hours.
Reflection
Meta-instructions: You should fill out your reflection in the appropriate section of the Google Doc you made when writing your Learning Plan. After writing your reflection, submit the url to your Google doc in the corresponding Reflection assignment on Canvas.
Read over your most recent prior reflection to help you compare where you are now to where you were previously. Then please write a couple of sentences (up to a paragraph) about each topic. The three topics can be intermingled in your reflection, since these experiences are often overlapping. You do not need to answer every question, but should answer the ones that feel the most relevant.
- Process
- Reflect on your learning process. Were you able to achieve your process goals? What went well and why? What did not go well and why? How will you work to improve your process in the next two weeks?
- Goals
- Reflect on your progress towards your goals. What have you learned? What are you still struggling with? Do you need to adjust anything with your process to help you better achieve your learning goals?
- Group Work
- What did you do in group work this week to actively engage each member of your group? What could you have done to better engage with each member and to make sure each member had the space to contribute and learn? What do you plan to do in the future to make group work a more productive learning experience for each person in your group? Was there anything you found particularly valuable or frustrating about group work this week? If someone in your group is doing a particularly good job facilitating group work, consider letting them know. If someone in your group is creating an environment in which it is challenging to learn, please let me know.
Final Grade Proposal
On your Google Doc, list each of your goals (both learning goals and process goals). Next, go through your reflections, quizzes, exams, and other relevant work, and based on specific evidence that you provide from those sources, describe the progress you've made toward each goal. Please also describe if there are things you could have done to better achieve your goals.
On your Google Doc, based on the progress you've described, please propose a grade for yourself, and briefly explain your choice of grade.
Submit the url of your Doc to Canvas on the Final Grade Proposal Assignment, and then schedule a meeting with me at go/kimmelhours to discuss your learning progress and grade proposal.
