Questioning Stereotypes Using 2019-2020 American Time Use Survey Data

When you look up "American" on Google Images, you're met with plenty of photos of people wearing the red-white-and-blue, cowboys, people waving American flags, overweight individuals holding hamburgers, football players, construction workers, and images of American soldiers. That is what the rest of the world things about the United States... are they correct? Let's take a look using data on Americans spend their time

Americans are known for their technology. Whether it be phones, video games, or TV, media consumes daily life in America… This stereotype is confirmed when we look at how Americans spend their leisure time.

Stereotype: Fast Food Lovers? pt 1

In these next two visualizations, we're going to look at how American's eat out. Of course, everyone synonymizes American with overweight, fast food lovers, right? It's pretty clear when most Americans grab food, concentrating around noon and during the evening. Take note that a substantial amount of people dine between 11 am and 12 pm while FAST FOOD (the next section) is more balanced.

If there were one stereotype to conquer them all, it would be that Americans love FAST FOOD. But when you look at it, people tend to take their time for their meals, especially lunch! Here, we look at all of the times where people go out to a restaurant, where fast food is considered getting and eating a meal under 40 minutes.
