Alcohol Consumption in teenagers
How does it affect school performance? What other factors and how do they play a role in consumption?
It is predictable that increased alcohol consumption decreases school performance.
Though, we were curious if the data actually supports this.
We created a scatterplot of grades on three tests over the course of a semester.
The opacity of the circles on the plot represent the cocentration of that point. Circles with higher opacity
mean more number of students in that point.
We see more number of students drink during weekdays. (there are more points with higher opacity).
p.s. dalc: weekday alcohol consumption from 1 (not a lot) to 5 (a lot)
Though the bottom rows stay stable, we can see the top cirlces moving left.
As the semester goes on, the students with high consumption are starting to drop their grades.
The points on the y-axis show grade 0 === leading to failure which we see increasing as semester progresses.
Our next graph, represents the relationship between
average test score vs guardian.
Green: mother
Orange: father
Purple: other.
Interestingly, there are more mother guardians in the graph.
it isn't fair to say teenagers with mothers as guardian drink more
What do you think?
Does the job of parent affect the drinking? Let's see. Scroll down!
The jobs are categorized into 'at_home', 'health', 'other', 'services', 'teacher'.
Interestingly, children of parents whose job is in health, drink less than others.
Finally, we looked at average number of failures compared to amount of alcohol consumed. We see that weekend alcohol consumption leads to more failed classes. Perhaps, a justification could be that students using the weekend time to rest, would energize and prepare them for the weekday--to increase efficiency, learning, and focus. And the alcohol consumption during weekends, doesn't allow for this rebooting and resting time.
CONCLUSION
We understand that this datset and exploration could not be a generalization of alcohol consumption
of teenagers. However, we do see the presence of it and how it affects grades, and failures, specially
as time passes. There are definately patterns to be observed.
