Recent advances in the field of computing have brought about tremendous changes in our lives. The 1990s have seen the birth of the World-Wide Web and an explosion in the growth of the Internet. In this course we will examine a number of issues that have developed as a result of these changing technologies. Some of the topics we will cover include privacy, security, constitutional issues such as free speech, and computer crime. Our discussions will include some consideration of historical and current trends including, for example, how we communicate and shop, issues relating to gender, and developments in research and industry.
